DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Dr. Mukyala Veronica

Welcome to Makerere University Business School, Jinja campus.
We thank you for choosing MUBS not only did you make the right decision on the programme, but also on where to study this programme from. After Kampala, Jinja is one of Uganda’s most important cities and probably even more important because of its uniqueness. Why is Jinja that Unique? Jinja at one stage was East Africa’s industrial town! This is because it had a large number of industries located in the area, and it employed a large number of people including foreigners from Rwanda, Kenya, and possibly other parts of Africa. Its uniqueness emerges primarily from the fact that the world’s longest river, the Nile starts its 4000 miles’ journey from Jinja town. This unique river is one of the important landmarks among the world’s features. And it is because of this river that industries were located in Jinja because a mile down the river is the famous Owen falls Dam that produced electricity for not only Uganda but for the rest of the region.

Uganda exported electricity to Kenya and today it continues to export electricity to Kenya, Rwanda, Congo, and Sudan. This makes Jinja a very unique place. Besides this, the Madhvani group which at one stage was the largest industrial conglomerate in East Africa has its home in the Jinja area. This group contributed large sums of tax revenue to the government. And as Uganda recovers, the Madhvani group is again regaining its importance and position in the Ugandan Economy. That is not all, Jinja lies on the gateway both into Uganda and out to Kenya. Its location on the river makes it unique and the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) campus is located in Jinja. This makes MUBS Jinja campus (the campus of your choice) Unique too. MUBS has been and continues to be a leading provider of Business and Management education not only in the country but in the region.
